Shardlow, Derbyshire

Once a busy inland river port, Shardlow grew with the opening in 1770 of the Trent and Mersey Canal which connected other canals throughout the Midlands. At that time the canals were the equivalent to the motorways we have today. Transporting goods on narrowboats, many warehouses and wharves were built which can still be seen today.
